Small cities clock smart growth in I-T collections

Finance minister’s recent observation that smaller cities have begun paying more taxes is borne out by numbers. Regional centres like Patna, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal and Jaipur also seem to have chipped in to the 40% growth in total income tax collections in the first half of the current fiscal. In fact, growth in personal income tax collections from these centres has been much higher than the national average of 26% in the first half of the current fiscal. Bhubaneswar recorded a growth of 186% in personal income tax collections. Tax collections till September ’06-07, stood at Rs 539 crore, as against Rs 189 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal. Guwahati too, registered a 72.13% growth in personal income tax collections, touching Rs 341 crore in April-September ’06-07. Jaipur zone has witnessed a 51.1% growth. Personal income tax collections from the regional centre grew from Rs 323 crore in April-September ’05-06 to Rs 488 crore in April-September ’06-07. In fact, Jaipur also witnessed the highest growth in corporate tax collections. It witnessed a rise of 209.2%, as against the national average of 47.9% in corporate tax collections which rose from Rs 348 crore in April-September ’05-06 to Rs 1076 crore in April-September ’06-07. Bhopal has witnessed a growth of 44.96% in personal income tax collections from Rs 639 crore in April-September ’05-06 to Rs 927 crore in the first half of the current fiscal. Hyderabad also saw similar growth levels. Personal income tax collection in first half this fiscal grew by 45% to Rs 1,443 crore from Rs 995 crore in corresponding period last fiscal. Patna witnessed a growth of 37.6% in personal income tax collections. Collections rose from Rs 280 crore in April-September ’05-06 to Rs 386 crore in April-September ’06-07.
