In more trouble for Vijay Mallya the Bombay High Court is set to hear the service tax department's case against the former liquor baron on Friday.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Advait Sethna, the counsel for the service tax department says any dues, service tax or customs are basically sovereign dues or debts, in the nature of taxes which people have paid.
Therefore, this is like the people's money where the government is the custodian, he says.
There are judgements, of late, wherein the sovereign dues are given precedence over the dues of banks and financial institutions, he adds.
