Prudent expenditure management including better tax collection and plugging revenue leakages will help the government to tide over the poor VAT collection which dipped by Rs250-crore in the last financial year (2012-13), chief secretary B Vijayan said on Tuesday.
Speaking to mediapersons at the Goa Revolution day function in Panaji, Vijayan said that VAT collection which was projected at 2,250 crore last year, had reduced to only 2,000 crore.
He said the state government has highlighted this in its recent representation to the Prime Minister seeking a special financial package of 3,000-crore to help the state due to the loss of revenue after the ban on mining.
Vijayan said the state government has introduced various schemes for people affected by the ban on mining such that the spending capacity in this belt rises.
