Delhi Congress to start signature campaign against VAT hike
June, 03rd 2016

The Delhi Congress will be launching a signature campaign next week to protest against the increase in excise and VAT on petrol and diesel, the party announced on Thursday.

Ajay Maken, president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, said party workers would aim to collect 10 lakh signatures from June 6 to 8. They would stand outside petrol pumps to “enlighten” customers about how the Delhi government and the Centre were “deceiving” them, said Mr. Maken.

Prices of petrol and diesel went up earlier this week, which Mr. Maken said did not reflect the fall in crude rates globally. The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi had also hiked the VAT twice since coming to power in February 2015, adding to the burden on consumers, said Mr. Maken.

“A Modi + Kejriwal tax has been slapped on Delhiites. We will collect signatures to protest against it and I will personally deliver them to the Mr. Kejriwal and Mr.Modi or Finance Minister Arun Jaitley,” he said.

The fall in prices of crude oil internationally should have reduced prices of petrol and diesel to Rs.38.68 and Rs.30 per litre respectively, said Mr. Maken. But the hike in taxes had nullified the impact.
