The Chandigarh region has witnessed a fall of 2.18 per cent in submission of income tax returns at 1,67,794 till July 31, against 1,71,542 returns received during the corresponding period last year.
The income tax officials, however, did not give any reason behind the fall in number of tax returns filed in the Chandigarh region, comprising Chandigarh and adjoining Mohali and Ropar districts of Punjab.
As per information available, the Commissioner of Income Tax (I) office of Income Tax Department received 47,654 returns this year as compared to 49,285 during last year.
Similarly, CIT (II) office of the department received 1,20,140 returns till July 31 as against 1,22,257 during the corresponding period of last year.
However, the total number of returns received does not include those received through electronic mode, said an income tax official adding the data of e-returns was still awaited.
CIT (I) office comprises Sector 1 to 25, Manimajra and Industrial Area I and II of Chandigarh while jurisdiction of CIT (II) office includes Mohali, Ropar, Nangal in Punjab and sector 26 to 56 and all villages falling within the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
