Paving the way for the formation of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday formally decided to request the President Pratibha Patil to revoke the Presidents Rule in the State.
The President had issued the proclamation placing the State under Presidents Rule on November 20, 2007 under clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution.
It was extended by six months by Parliament on April 29 itself as the proclamation was coming to an end on May 19 and the poll schedule spilled over up to May 25. (As per the Constitution, Presidents Rule can be imposed for six months only at a time.)
